Tom & Bill get #4. One for the thumb?
I’m a Yankee & Pats fan here in Connecticut. I grew up as a Giant’s fan but by going to school in Boston & the Pats in that new league, I couldn’t help but get hooked. People ask, Why just the Giants, ya coulda dumped the Yanks for the Sox…” Silly. I was born a Yankee fan. My dad taught me. He picked his favorite team during his first listened to broadcast. It was Tigers v. Cubs and he picked the Cubbies. My brother followed his steps. I picked the Yankees because it was 1958 & they were not the Braves. My team worked out picking it his way. Now that he’s gone I have a lot of Cubs memorable. And a UConn class ring from 1946. Hope we see you again when we do our next meme… Same time. Same blog.
There is something about baseball with fathers and sons. My dad is a Cubs fan. As soon as the Mets came to New York, he brought my brother and me to games every year. But I was a Yankees fan. He promised me at that first game that for every Cubs v. Mets game, he’d take us to a Yankees game. He did not lie. My best memories of my youth were with my brother and dad and baseball. Tonight the Yankees start another season. The Cubs are coming to New York this season. When they last did, say 6 years ago, my brother arranged for us to go for the series. Baseball, fathers and sons. My son Ben and I always go to Yankee Stadium every season. The year they were about to demolish the original Yankee Stadium, we knew we had to go. I called my dad. I said, “I know you hate the Yanks, but Ben & I are doing one last sojourn. Wanna come?” He said, “Sure, when we going?”
I got good news about my dad today. He’s ready to move into a high end assisted living facility. He’ll have his own apartment, but there’s a dining room for three meals a day & of course, medical attention. My brother is footing the bill and it’s only a few miles from me. I hope I can take him to a baseball game. But at the moment, as their former captain, his attention and mine is on UConn. Go Huskies.
Thank you all for your kind words of support. [Editor’s note: Bud’s Dad died in December of 2014…]
