While I was deciding what to write for a post on The WTIT Tape Radio Blog for Memorial Day this year, I decided read last year’s Memorial Day post. The sad part, once I read it, is that I could have easily been written today as this senseless war drags on. What I did not write last year is the enormous respect and gratitude I have for those who serve and have served. I did not write about those who made the ultimate sacrifice for we who are free. Today, I want to thank those who have served, those who currently serve and those who laid down their lives. I would like to talk peace, as well.
I mention often how I marched and attended peace rallies in the late sixties and early seventies. I am very proud of that fact. And I am ashamed how we as a nation treated those who fought that horrible war. The great thing about we as liberals is that we can intellectually hold true to our principles and still admit our mistakes. We shall never blame those who serve in a war for the mistakes of our political leaders. Conservatives, on the other hand, never admit to their mistakes. That’s why the same warped thinking about Vietnam did not stop us for getting into this ridiculous war with Iraq. As they wave their flags at us and call themselves patriots, they will not understand that we are just as proud and just as patriotic. How can they still stand by a president who is both constantly wrong and a liar?
George Bush should be impeached. He has stomped on our civil rights. He lied to get into this foolish war. Now the democrats are no better, they wilted under the president’s pressure to set time tables to get out. It is way past time to bring our troups home. I said it here a year ago and pray I won’t be saying it yet again next year.
